  • Rust at the hatch and rear trailing arms All years One source so far

What to check: Look along the bottom edge of the hatch and at the rear trailing arms, and under any body kit.

Two posters in one Grassroots Motorsports thread report rust, one at the bottom edge of the hatch and one at the rear trailing arms, hidden under body kits. A third in the same thread says these Supras do not seem to rust badly.

Recalls

  • 83V133000 1984

A fault in the voltage regulator's integrated circuit can overcharge the battery, which can damage it and cut electrical power, including the lights and ignition, without warning. The regulator is replaced.7

  • 84V108000 1983–1984

On cars with the 5M-GE engine and an oil pressure gauge rather than a warning light, the oil pressure sender may be faulty. Under heat and pressure it can leak oil or let the engine seize without warning. The sender is replaced.8

Checked against NHTSA records on 21 October 2026.

What buyers say

Reputation: what owners and the press report

  • Sought after: A running car without much rust All years One source so far

In one Grassroots Motorsports thread, three members speak well of the 2nd gen. One says there is nothing wrong with it if it runs and has little rust, one who has owned two calls them bulletproof and fun, and one who owned one says it was great apart from a hard starter job.6
