The story

History: facts, each with its source

LCE Performance says the 22R replaced the 2.2L 20R in 1981 and was built until 1995. A fuel-injected 22R-E followed in 1983, and a turbocharged 22R-TE was offered in the Toyota Pickup and the 4Runner from 1986 through 1988.1

Hagerty writes that the carbureted 22R had only 100 hp to move a 3,700 lb 4Runner, and that the fuel injection offered from 1985 raised it to 116 hp and 140 lb-ft.2
