Glossary
The parts and systems the dossiers name, each explained once, with what to watch for and the models it was fitted to.
Suspension
-
Bilstein shocks Draft
Shock absorbers made by Bilstein, often fitted to off-road and sport trims.
-
Fox internal-bypass shocks Draft
Fox shock absorbers that change their damping with where they are in their travel: comfort in the middle, more support near the ends.
-
Hi-Trac Draft
Toyota's name for the independent front suspension the 4Runner got in 1986, in place of a solid axle.
-
independent front suspension Draft
Front suspension that lets each front wheel move on its own, for a smoother ride and better handling on the road.
-
KDSS Draft
Toyota's hydraulically linked anti-roll bars, which stay stiff on the road and let the suspension flex off it.
-
solid front axle Draft
One beam joining both front wheels, so they move together: tough and flexible off road, rougher on it.
-
X-REAS Draft
Toyota's shock absorbers linked corner to opposite corner, to keep the body flat in turns.
Drivetrain
-
A-TRAC Draft
Toyota's traction control for four-wheel drive, which brakes and cuts power so the drive goes to the wheels that have grip.
-
full-time 4WD Draft
Four-wheel drive that is always on, with a center differential so it can be driven on dry pavement.
-
locking rear differential Draft
A differential that can lock both wheels on an axle together, so the one with grip keeps turning when the other has none.
-
part-time 4WD Draft
Four-wheel drive the driver switches on, with the front and rear locked together, meant for loose ground rather than dry pavement.
-
transfer case Draft
The gearbox behind the transmission that splits power between the front and rear axles, usually with a low range for crawling.
