Four-wheel drive the driver switches on, with the front and rear locked together, meant for loose ground rather than dry pavement.

The story

History: facts, each with its source

Wikipedia says a part-time transfer case switches between two- and four-wheel drive but has no center differential to let the axles turn at different speeds. Such a case can lock the front and rear drive shafts together, and one not designed for the road can suffer driveline windup if driven on dry pavement.1
